After two years of somewhat tepid reaction by DVD fans to the new features offered by Blu-ray, Warner Home Video has gotten even the most die-hard DVD curmudgeons excited about its new Maximum Movie Mode feature – available exclusively on Blu-ray. The feature is a new, visually immersive film (or TV) companion piece in which filmmakers take control of a film in progress, step into the viewer’s screen and share their ideas in person. The first MMM came out earlier this summer on the Watchmen Blu-ray disc from Warner Home Entertainment, with director Zach Snyder providing an incredibly insightful tour of his thought process, and tips and techniques that he used to create his visually stunning adaptation of the popular graphic novel. Among other things, the MM offers a great way to juxtapose frames from the graphic novel with corresponding shots from the film. With the arrival of Terminator Salvation on Blu-ray disc, director McG shows why he is one of the most sought after creative minds in the movie business. In an engaging on-screen performance, he uncovers the details of how he and his team created the film’s amazing special effects. The trend in critical response is tipifed by comments like these: “Most Blu-ray features leave me a little cold, but the Watchmen’s “Maximum Movie Mode” actually looks really cool,” said Gizmodo’s Adam Frucci, while DVDTALK.com notes, “Warner Brothers has treated us to the best supplemental feature on any digital format to date yet again.” And Hi-Def Digest posts, “Warner’s mother of all picture-in picture experiences is included and is easily the main selling point of this Blu-ray release.” In addition to director-hosted interludes, MMM also features various “link-outs” that allow the viewer to delve deeper into additional footage, galleries and interactive information. 1K developed the concept for Watchmen on behalf of and in conjunction with Warner Home Entertainment, which has crafted it into an ongoing branded feature for select Blu-ray releases. 1K handled shooting, production and programming on both titles, and also completed full disc compression and programming for the Terminator Salvation release – making it the most complex full BD-J disc we’ve created to date. We’re really looking forward to building on the momentum that the feature has been able to generate with fans and can’t wait to see what future filmmakers will have to share.
