Description

he 23rd SC Infantry is a group enthusiasts that portray Confederate soldiers of the Civil War. We learn from and enjoy the ways of life of an era gone by. We are also the hosts for The Skirmish Of Gamble's Hotel held at The Columns in Florence, South Carolina. Hey look - an update! This is dated August 22, 2010. We're gearing up for the 2011 event, and look at this - we're doing it early this year. That's not accurate. This is about the time we should begin planning for the event. It's only 6 months from now. We have some fundamental things to discuss that could play into how we put on the next event. We're going to get together on Saturday, September 11th at the Darby plantation. We're either having two meetings, or one meeting with two parts. One part will be a general business meeting for the 23rd. The second part will be specifically about the 2011 Columns event. At the business meeting we ’ll be electing a new board of directors. There wasn ’t anything wrong with the last one. It ’s been two or three years since the board was established and it ’s time for it to be updated. This is very important with respect to the health of the organization. Everyone that is a member is strongly encouraged to attend. Check the bulletin board for information and details about the process. At the Columns event meeting we need to arrange committees to take care of the different tasks necessary for putting on the event. We also need to make some decisions about expenditures and budgets. If you ’re a member, you have a say so, so please plan to attend. The first part of the meeting will begin at 10:00 am. Lunch and supper are being provided. The Darby's have invited anyone that cares to camp to come and throw down. Thanks y'all for the hospitality.Scholarship Program. Update, 8/22/2010. The award for the upcoming year has been authorized. Good job guys for getting the award made at the beginning of the school year. I think the recipient will appreciate the money very much now as they have tuition, books, room and board to pay for. When we know who receives the award, we'll report again. The 23rd SC Infantry Scholarship was so well received, we decided to make it one of our principal efforts along with historic preservation. I don ’t remember which of our members said it, but it went like this, “What could be a better effort of historic preservation than a mind? ”. It sounds paradoxical, but the more you think about it the more sense it makes. For those of you that aren ’t familiar with the program, last year we decided to award a scholarship to a student at Francis Marion University . The student was required to be a history major entering their senior year of study. The amount was 500.00 for the fall and 500.00 for the spring semesters, for a total of a 1000.00 award. The school was pleased to work with us on this. And the young lady that received the scholarship was very appreciative. If this year's event goes well, or more contributions are received, there may be a second award made. If you're interested in being part of this worthy endeavor talk with any one of our members or check the contacts page . Our scholarship is listed on the University website.
