8/1/09 The summer is already here and it is evident with the triple digit numbers. With the heat bring long mornings, short afternoons, and long nights of riding here at 3drum. I have always been a person to set benchmarks relative to my short and long term goals rather it is with our personal horses or outside training horses. Due to there only being 24 hours in the day and the onset of high temperatures I have had to be selective on the outside training horses that I agree to take on. I enjoy winning on my personal horses but I am passionate and probably get a greater fulfillment when our colts or training horses put others at the pay window! With that being said I am excited to say our exhibition team aka futurity colts are clocking about .7 to second off the toughs! Stay blogged in for future futurity results on our 3 year olds! As far as Little Monkey Boss is concerned I am taking it easy this year due to my hectic schedule. Every year I give Monkey about a 3-4 month break during the winter. My goal has been each year to typically start bringing him back to running shape about April. As a barrel racer anytime you turn your horse out or give him a break you always wonder if this year is going to be as good as or better than last. Monkey has yet to disappoint me with his returns from his annual grazing vacation. Monkey has come back stronger and better than ever. I feel so blessed and fortunate to have Monkey; to me he is my Million Dollar Baby! Last but not least 3drum has been honored to team up with Pac West and I have been appointed the Regional Director. I have to admit I was hesitant when Will approached me about joining the Pac West family due to lack of time. Will stayed at the 3drum ranch back in the spring while he was orchestrating his Ardmore barrel race. During the first few days of his stay I was blowing and going as usual training and riding. I hadn ’t thought anything more about the Pac West Ardmore barrel race with the exception of entering it. After a few days of observing Will diligently planning the barrel race and completing all the check and balances necessary it became more obvious that this was going to be an excellent production. I was very impressed with the care and thoroughness that Pac West takes when planning for their barrel races. After juggling the thought of less sleep or being a part of a great association I decided I can always sleep but the opportunity is slim to be able to join such an elite group that produces, in my mind, some of the best barrel races. I have been to numerous shows, big and small, and know what my quirks and pet peeves are of barrel races that aren ’t run the best. Therefore I wanted to ensure that everything and anything that a barrel racer looks for in a big race was incorporated into ours! Pac West has had good turn outs and has delivered successful barrel races in the California area and decided to move into Oklahoma to spread the wealth! Rumor has it that Pac West will be doing a little two stepping into Texas with their next barrel race at the wonderful Alvarado pen. That ’s it for now my afternoon air condition hibernation alarm has just rung.
