If you own your own home, you are paying annual real-estate taxes on it. The amount you pay each tax year may be deductible. In some cases, your mortgage company pays those taxes for you, in which case the mortgage company will send to you a Form 1098 (Mortgage Interest Statement) by January 31st of the new year for the prior year. If you do not receive it in time, contact your mortgage company. If your mortgage company does not pay the real-estate taxes for you, then you pay the taxes yourself. Bring to your tax interview your Form 1098 and the amount of real-estate taxes you paid.
