A popular use of the program is the purchase of new, more efficient grain-drying equipment. Guaranteed Loans & Grants for Energy Projects USDA Rural Development is now taking applications for "The Renewable Energy for America Program," a guaranteed loan and grant program to help rural businesses or agricultural producers create renewable energy or make energy-saving improvements to their facilities or farms. Last year a record of 167 rural businesses and producers in Iowa received nearly $14.3 million through this program. Examples of renewable energy projects include wind, solar, biomass, bio-energy, biogas (anaerobic digestion), geothermal or hydroelectric. Energy efficiency projects include improvements to facilities, buildings or processes that reduce energy consumption such as increasing the R-value of side-walls or ceilings, adding environmental computer controllers, or installing more efficient heating systems, windows, doors, lighting, ventilation systems, cooling system equipment, pumping systems, commodity handline systems, drying systems, etc.
