ARTICLE ON INSULATION FROM THE TORONTO SUN AUGUST 10 & 12, 2007 Insulation: Know your R-value (by Jack Kazmierski) "With the rising cost of energy, properly insulating your home is a must... Currently, the Ontario Building Code requires builders to insulate the attic to an R-value of 40. But if your home was built many years ago it may be time to supplement whatever insulation was put into your attic when the Code wasn't as demanding... a lot of older homes were never insulated properly and some aren't even insulated to an R-32 standard... Attics can be insulated either with batt insulation, spray foam (cost-restrictive), or blown insulation... fibreglass and cellulose... With all his years of experience, Schuts recommends blown insulation over batts, and cellulose over fibreglass. For R-40 you'll need 10" of cellulose, 13" of fibreglass or 12" of Rockwool."
