I am delighted and deeply honored to serve as AADPRT President. I first attended an AADPRT Meeting as chief resident from New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in 1989, and in December of that same year I became the general psychiatry residency training director at UC Davis, a position I have enjoyed for the past 18 years. AADPRT has helped to guide, support and encourage me over those years and the collegial relationships established and nurtured at AADPRT have been invaluable in my career. Psychiatric education is a resource intensive enterprise. Each graduate of a general psychiatry residency program is the recipient of hundreds of hours of teaching and supervision over four years of residency. It would not happen without the talents and hard work of dedicated training directors, associate training directors, teaching faculty, chief residents, training coordinators, and support staff. And the most important teachers of psychiatry residents: their patients, peers, and family members. The goals of training in psychiatry go beyond the acquisition of an ever expanding knowledge base in neuroscience, psychology, neurology, epidemiology, psychopathology, human development, and differential therapeutics. Psychiatrists must also learn the clinical skills needed by a modern psychiatrist in interviewing and assessment, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and the important elements of being a caring and compassionate physician and working as part of a health care team...
