Description
18th Annual Asian American Youth Leadership Conference (AAYLC) 2010 DATE: Friday, April 30, 2010 WHERE: Portland Community College - Sylvania Campus TIME: 8 AM to 4:00 PM More Info... The annual Asian American Youth Leadership Conference (AAYLC) is the brainchild of the Asian American community-based organizations in the Portland metropolitan. This group consists of Asian community leaders, representatives of several school districts in the Portland area, the Chinese American Citizens Alliance, the Japanese American Citizens League, The Vietnamese Community Association of Oregon, the Refugee & Immigrant Consortium of Oregon & SW Washington, and the Center for New Americans. Each year more than 400 high school students, selected from the Portland, Beaverton, David Douglas, Hillsboro, and Tigard school districts attend this conference. Students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds, including Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Iranian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Pakistani, Thai, and Vietnamese, among others. Although there is a prevailing notion that there are no disadvantaged Asian students, the truth of the matter is that many Asian students come from refugee and first-generation immigrant families. These students struggle to overcome language, cultural and prejudice barriers in order to excel in school and become more active members of their communities. What this conference aims to do is instill participants with the value and importance of discipline, self-confidence, self-esteem and the overall rewards of achievement. Each year the Planning Committee selects a particular theme for the conference and then develops a series of workshops related to that theme. Although the theme and topics change from year to year, all workshops are developed to achieve the conference
