For decades, people underestimated the abilities of people with disabilities, as they were placed in segregated workshops and production centers. Today, we know better. We made a commitment to close our segregated programs and offer all of the people we serve the opportunity to work in the community. It took three yeras to accomplish- and today all of our services have a focus that is community-based. Unemployment rates for working-age adults with disabilities have hovered at an estimated 70 percent for many years. We continue to challenge this by creating unemployment opportunities, offering vocational and educational training, providing assistive technologies, and transportation for those we serve. Gainful employment is one of the most effective ways of combating negative perceptions about people with disabilities, and our track record only suggests we will see continued success.
