Description
In 1993 specific steps were undertaken to develop a certification body, and in 1994 the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners was incorporated in Washington, D.C. ABIME is an organization independent of existing specialty and training organizations established to facilitate the development of an independent and high quality certification process. ABIME will interface cooperatively with other organizations and will not favor any specific group or specialty.
Gerald S. Steiman, MD, CIME, is a practicing neurologist in Columbus, with over 25 years experience in performing IMEs. After completing his internship and residency at the University of Manitoba, Canada, he completed a fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Steiman is board certified in neurology and a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He has authored several articles published in Disability Medicine which focus on the significance of various neurological diagnoses to the IME examiner and has lectured extensively on the use of the AMA Guides.
ABIME is committed to keeping its certified physicians up to date in disability medicine by providing programs and services that foster professional development throughout their careers. The following is a partial list of informational and educational tools that keep ABIME physicians at the top of their profession. All benefits, including subscriptions to publications, are activated upon receipt of the annual Board of Registry payment. A new program instituted this year allows for recertification without retaking the ABIME exam.
