An Umbrella Policy provides liability coverage over and above your auto, home and business policies. Coverage in both instances is extremely broad, but there are always exclusions that must be considered. Your primary insurance policy will not typically protect or defend you if fraud, libel, slander and other similar situations arise while certain Umbrella policies provide coverage here. I’m not suggesting you say or do whatever you want and expect an insurance company to defend you, but Umbrellas do offer broader coverage than the underlying policies. What you can expect and why this coverage is so important is that when you reach or exceed your primary insurance liability limits, the Umbrella policy may kick-in and provide you limits up to the Umbrella policy limits.
