DEFINITION: The term frozen shoulder describes a shoulder affected by a slow onset of pain, inability to sleep on the affected shoulder, painful and restricted motion with normal x-rays. There are two different types of frozen shoulders. The first type is a primary frozen shoulder, the cause of which is uncertain. It commonly affects people who have diabetes, a seizure disorder, and other medical co-morbidities. This is the most common type that we see in our practice. The second type is due to another condition such as a fracture, arthritis, or rotator cuff tear.
