Farmers make decisions based on economics. Fertilizer is a major cost of crop production. Although Best Management Practices (BMPs) can help farmers reduce fertilizer rates, cut costs and improve stewardship, they are not widely adopted. Fear of yield loss is a primary reason producers do not follow these BMPs. The extra fertilizer applied by producers has served as "insurance" against yield loss when heavy rains wash fertilizer from fields, or when bumper crop conditions call for extra nutrients.
