Practice guidelines of the AIUM are intended to provide the medical ultrasound community with guidelines for the performance and recording of high-quality ultrasound examinations. The guidelines reflect what the AIUM considers the minimum criteria for a complete examination in each area but are not intended to establish a legal standard of care. AIUM-accredited practices are expected to generally follow the guidelines with recognition that deviations from these guidelines will be needed in some cases, depending on patient needs and available equipment.

January 23, 2014 Ultrasound is recognized as an increasingly important modality in a multitude of point-of-care procedures, as it is recognized as a safe, effective, and affordable tool to address many clinical conditions. With the increased use, demonstration of proficiency and, ultimately, reimbursement, have emerged as a growing concern among many point-of-care ultrasound users.

While there are multiple ways to address this issue, a growing number of specialty societies are working along with the AIUM to develop training and practice guidelines leading to the development of practice accreditation. Such is the case with otolaryngologists–head and neck surgeons.

Over the past decades, the AIUM has achieved these goals through educational, scientific, and professional activities. The success, respect, and credibility that the AIUM has attained are based on the involvement of all ultrasound professionals, including physicians, sonographers, scientists, engineers, other healthcare providers, and manufacturers of ultrasound equipment. This unique combination of specialists ensures that recommended policies, practice standards, safety procedures, and performance guidelines receive the widest evaluation possible.
