The AOC is committed to providing a better quality of life for those people who require organ or tissue transplants, while respecting the families who share the gift of life. Our Story... Since 1968, when organ transplantation began in Alabama, the need for transplantable organs quickly exceeded the supply. Established in 1979 as the "Alabama Organ Bank," the independent organ procurement organization (OPO) has since been renamed the Alabama Organ Center (AOC) and has grown to serve all hospitals in the state. The AOC is the federally designated OPO for Alabama. Our mission at the Alabama Organ Center is to provide families an opportunity to donate organs and tissues, to support these families regardless of their decision, and to promote equitable utilization of these gifts to others. The Alabama Organ Center's goal is to facilitate the donor process, to coordinate the recovery of organs and tissues for transplantation and research, and to promote interest in the organ and tissue donor program. The Alabama Organ Center is committed to increasing knowledge about organ and tissue donation and transplantation, while eliminating common misconceptions regarding donation through ongoing public and professional education programs.
