CFO, Sales Manager, and Production Manager for a company that develops laser-based systems used to make die boards. President, VP/Sales and VP/Manufacturing for a manufacturer of custom-engineered composite subcomponents sold to Caterpillar, John Deere and Ingersoll Rand. Sales Manager for a manufacturer of automated laser cutting and welding equipment.

VP/Business Development & Programs for a $70-million manufacturer of electronic systems used by the military in naval, land and aerospace platforms. This candidate has since been promoted twice by this company, and now is president of a $50-million sister company owned by the parent company. Business Unit Director for an $80-million business unit that was part of an $800-million maker of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Chief Quality Officer, Chief of Program Management, and Manager of Manufacturing Engineering for a $100-million manufacturer of automotive steering columns.

Ah, reps. To hear manufacturers tell it, they don't call on the right accounts, they miss too many accounts or they don't call on any accounts. They never get your prices right. They don't understand what your company does. Two months ago, you hired a rep after she told you that she'd get right in there and tell General Motors just how great your company is. You haven't heard from her since, and you're beginning to wonder if she remembers who you are.

Once we bumped into many stumbling blocks. Again, this was one of those rare cases where the candidate was earning significantly more ($390,000) than our client could pay but was willing to take less salary in exchange for a lifestyle change. After meeting her, our client described her as unusually qualified and reached up well beyond their salary range to $260,000. Fortunately for them, money was not her driving force.
