Writing quickly and clearly is an art best learned by working under hard deadlines and demanding editors. I was blessed, and cursed, with both. For seven years I covered sports for the Virginia Beach Beacon (circulation: 81,260 weekdays, 100,883 Sunday) and often for the Virginian-Pilot (circulation 194,824 daily, 231,994 Sunday). I also wrote occasionally for the Chesapeake Clipper and the Norfolk Compass, and was hired as a stringer (out-of-town freelance writer) for the Charlotte Observer, The San Diego Union-Tribune, the (Connecticut) Keene Sentinel and the Cincinnati Enquirer. I also wrote once for the Associated Press. In my early years of sports journalism, I mostly covered middle school, high school and youth sports, but I eventually got to cover some big events and interview national figures. A partial list of my journalistic accomplishments includes: Regularly covered sports in 11 high schools, including football, basketball, soccer, track and field, softball, baseball, gymnastics, wrestling, cross country, volleyball, field hockey, golf, swimming and diving. Covered or wrote about youth and adult sports including water polo, billiards, martial arts, speed skating, kickball, Special Olympics, and marathons.
