Alan Powell has been designing and fabricating furniture for over 30 years, and designing for urban renovations for almost as long. Although he began as a teacher and restored antiques as a side interest, working on his master's degree as a graduate assistant in industrial arts pointed him in a new direction. With access to all equipment related to wood, Powell studied styles, textures, colors, finishes, forms and properties of wood. After graduating and teaching for a year, he began to renovate townhouses and older homes. This work and the continuing furniture restoration eventually led him to the architecturally inspired work he does today. Today, Alan Powell designs and fabricates furniture and designs houses. He has worked closely with architects and designers in Philadelphia and now in Taos, New Mexico and surrounding areas. His portfolio reflects this broad range of work including houses, additions, dining room sets, small quantity production furniture, commissioned work and art pieces for galleries and clients. Continuing study and travel, a desire toward perfection, and 30 years of experience bring a unique perspective to his approach in concept and design.
