Description

From 1992 through 1994, AADC organized itself, completed a feasibility study for an orbital launch facility, raised funds and began permitting for a launch facility at Narrow Cape, on Kodiak Island. Narrow Cape was selected because launches into polar orbit can be made over the North Pacific Ocean, avoiding populated areas. In 1995 the legislature approved funding for the Kodiak Launch Complex. Design work was initiated and work on permits continued. In 1996, the U.S. Air Force Atmospheric Interceptor Test Program committed to two launches from the Kodiak Launch Complex. Bids for construction were solicited in 1997 and construction began in 1998. AADC signed its first contract with a commercial customer that year, Lockheed Martin Corporation. Construction was completed in 2000.
