AHIP’s mission is to ensure that low-income residents of Charlottesville and Albemarle County have the opportunity to live in safe, decent and affordable housing. AHIP believes that safe and decent housing is a basic human right. AHIP began as “SCRUB”, an all-volunteer grass-roots effort to clean up debris and repair damaged houses in the wake of 1969’s devastating Hurricane Camille. Through this work, volunteers became keenly aware of substandard housing conditions. The volunteer group grew into AHIP, which became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1976. Housing Rehabilitation Program. This program provides major rehab and renovation services for low- to moderate-income homeowners in Albemarle County and designated areas of Charlottesville. AHIP frequently partners with peer agencies to serve residents of neighboring counties. Emergency Home Repair Program. This program addresses minor but urgent repair needs for very low-income renter or owner households in Albemarle County. Charlottesville Healthy Homes Initiative. This program, funded through the Charlottesville Housing Fund, addresses medium to large repairs for City homeowners up to 50 percent of AMI. Affordable Rental Housing. AHIP fills our area’s affordable housing gap by preserving and creating affordable units. Our communities include Park’s Edge and Treesdale Park (currently in development). Wraparound Services and Programs. Financial counseling, maintenance education, and service referrals are all essential pieces of AHIP’s rehab and repair programs—the advocacy value that AHIP adds to its role as contractor. A range of youth and adult programs at Park’s Edge—from a no-cost after school program to GED classes—serve the Park’s Edge neighborhood as well as the greater community.
