C.J. Baltus was scratching out a meager living in the Northwoods of Wisconsin as an independent insurance agent. The propane industry was in its infancy with only a handful of oil companies marketing, the then exotic, "bottled gas". One of the more progressive oil companies building a dealer network for "bottled gas" was the Skelly Oil Company. To become a Skelgas dealer, all Charlie had to do was buy ten 100 lb cylinders of "Skellgas". Charlie took the plunge and had ten "bottled gas" cylinders shipped to him by rail from Kansas City, Missouri. Today, over 65 years later, the vision and foresight continue as Gasco.
