Our story begins in the 1920s, in Manhattan's Garment District. Algy was born as the dream of three men whose lives and careers centered around fine embroidery and stitchery. From our formal inception in 1937 our primary business was the design of finely fabricated fashions; first as a segment of New York's fashion industry and then as professional costumers. The 40s and 50s saw our business change as we moved from the design and manufacture of theatrical costumes, recital costumes and lyrical costumes to the production of costumes and uniforms available nationwide to schools and studios. We evolved from a retailer to a direct merchant. Algy was a pioneer in the catalog arena, producing our first one in 1954, and our first full-color catalog four years later. Always known for our embroidery, by the 1950s we had produced our first solid sequin majorette uniform. With the popularity of college halftime shows, Algy received national exposure; our leotards quickly became, and remain today, the state of the art in majorette uniforming! We made an important decision in 1970 to move to Florida, and packed our bags. The change gave us more room, more resources and a beautiful place to do business; our factory as it exists today is a result of this move. The nation's bicentennial was another huge landmark in our history; every troupe, group and team marched, danced and twirled in red, white and blue and the chances were good that they did it in an Algy!
