Organic Mulch What the heck is it? Organic mulch is mulch made from a previously living material, typically trees, for example, Melaleuca, Eucalyptus, and pine trees. Inorganic mulch is typically some sort of rock, for example, lava rock, crushed shell, or river rock. Why is organic mulch better than inorganic mulch? Whether the inorganic mulch is white, light, or dark, it heats up and transfer that heat to the surrounding areas. White rock tends to reflect the heat up to the bottom of the plant material; whereas, dark inorganic mulch transfers heat into the soil. Either way, the inorganic material is heating up and increasing stress on the plant material. The additional heat encourages moisture in the soil to evaporate more quickly and robs the plant material of valuable water especially during the dry season of Southwest Florida. On the other hand, organic mulch has many benefits: 1) Placed 2" to 3" deep it helps reduce weeds; 2) It breaks down adding organics to our nutrient poor soil. This organic material is further broken down and provides nutrients, and micronutrients needed by our plants; 3) Added organics in the soil, help retain moisture in the soil; 4) May be used to reduce competition for nutrients needed for our desired plants. For example, when you plant a tree, it is recommended that at a minimum, the area under the drip line of the tree (the extent of the limbs and leaves), is mulched. This removes competition from other plants, including sod, which will take nutrients and water before the tree can get them. All Native Garden Center sells mulch made from Melaleuca trees. Forestry Resources, a Fort Myers company, makes the mulch as a byproduct of removing this category 1, invasive exotic tree from our natural areas in Southwest Florida. We carry two products made from Melaleuca trees, FloriMulch and PlaySafe. FloriMulch is ground smaller and is excellent close to the soil where it will break down more quickly and add nutrients to the soil. PlaySafe is a larger chunk and breaks down more slowly. Both products are excellent. We believe these products are the best mulch to use in your yard. Please do not use mulch made from cypress trees. This is a native wetland tree and our natural areas are further degraded by harvesting this tree.
