Description

AMERICAN AQUATICS is a biological consulting firm that specializes in collecting environmental samples from a variety of sources. As our name implies we are specialists in collecting aquatic organisms such as fish and benthic macro invertebrates. We are experienced with the collection of water, soil and sediment samples. We also collect samples from terrestrial organisms such as whitetail deer, rabbits, birds and earthworms. We have extensive experience in NPDES and Stormwater permitting issues.

AMERICAN AQUATICS has considerable experience in sampling fish populations from contaminated environments. We have collected fish tissue samples from fish in streams and reservoirs throughout the USA. We are familiar and experienced in collecting fish fillets as well as whole fish using a variety of protocols. In addition to sampling fish we also are experienced in sampling for contaminants in other aquatic organisms. We have collected samples of turtles, invertebrates, whitetail deer, rabbits, small mammals, birds and earthworms.

AMERICAN AQUATICS is experienced in managing lakes and ponds to provide the maximum recreational opportunities for the owners. Lakes and ponds are complex systems that benefit from the development of a management plan that takes into account not only the biology but the requirements of the owner. Some people want to catch big bass, bluegill, or catfish while others want a pretty view. Still others want to use the lake for hunting. Usually owners want a combination of these uses. This is where AMERICAN AQUATICS can be most useful.

Our staff is lead by J. Fred Heitman, a Certified Fisheries Professional by the American Fisheries Society. He has more than 35 years experience in performing fish sampling studies. Additionally, he is a recognized expert in the area of NPDES stormwater permitting issues. He is a Certified Stormwater Inspector and a Certified Erosion Inspector both by the National Stormwater Center. He is state certified in both Tennessee and Florida to conduct stormwater inspections. Mr. Heitman has had an extensive amount of training to augment his considerable experience.

AMERICAN AQUATICS has a staff of experienced fishery biologists that regularly perform stream and lake assessments of fish populations. We can evaluate the relative health of a stream by determining the numbers and species of fish that are present. This information is useful in assessing the impact (or lack thereof) of activities in or near the stream; recording the recovery of the stream; or providing an initial assessment of the stream prior to some upcoming event. We also make management recommendations for the stream to meet our client needs for recovery, enhancement or maintenance.
