Description
The concept of AOD started back in 1997 as an informal weekly gathering of people called AniMov. In 2000, AniMov changed its name to Anime Overdose, and in 2003 the staff of Anime Overdose teamed up with Santa Clara University's anime club to make the first Anime Overdose event happen at the university. In 2004, the event was held again at Santa Clara University and drew over 800 people to the campus. After that, the decision was made to move the convention to San Francisco and change the focus from Japanese animation to all forms of animation (with an emphasis on American cartoons). There, the convention expanded to nearly 1600 individuals, and was a huge success. After the 2005 event, the staff of Anime Overdose decided to rename the convention to simply AOD and further emphasize the global nature of animation and its fandom.
