Description

Our Work Our Success Our Story Our Work APAH is the only nonprofit affordable housing developer to work exclusively in Arlington County. Arlington is one of the most densely populated jurisdictions in the country, and, though its population is diverse, rising property prices, spurred by increasing density, increasing cost of living, and economic development, have been reducing the number of affordable homes available in our community. To meet this need, APAH owns, develops, and preserves quality apartment communities that are affordable to Arlingtonians earning between $20,000 and $60,000 a year. Since housing security can become a platform for low-income families and individuals to achieve personal goals, APAH runs a bi-lingual resident services program to bring available resources, community programming, and educational opportunities to our 1,500 residents. APAH also partners with community organizations to address the specific housing needs of at-risk populations. For instance, APAH partners with Borromeo Housing to provide homes for young single mothers pursuing their education, and with Arlington County's Department of Human Services (DHS) to provide homes for individuals with severe mental illness. In recognition of APAH's tremendous growth and contributions to the field of affordable housing, the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers (HAND) named APAH Developer of the Year -- placing APAH first among nonprofit affordable housing developers in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia. While demonstrating industry best-practices, APAH also demonstrates the best qualities of the Arlington business sector, supporting local businesses by providing quality affordable housing to working Arlingtonians and demonstrating strong business integrity. In 2008, APAH was named the Best Nonprofit Small Business of the Year by the Arlington Chamber of Commerce for its contributions to the Arlington County community and the Arlington economy. Our Story The Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing (APAH) was founded in 1989 by four families concerned that the increasing cost of living in Arlington County would make it impossible for their children to move back home after college. These families established APAH and began rehabilitating apartments and offering them at affordable rents. In the 20 years since it's founding, APAH has developed a $160 million portfolio of 11 residential properties all located within Arlington County. Governed and directed by Arlingtonians, APAH is strongly guided by the Arlington community. Every member of the APAH board lives or works in Arlington County, and every property APAH owns is located in Arlington County.
