Watauga Medical Center, Inc. is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). The Joint Commission establishes standards for the operation of hospitals and other healthcare organizations. They visit hospitals every three years to assess the hospitals compliance with these standards. Watauga Medical Center was last reviewed in April 14-17, 2003. Watauga Medical Center's Laboratory and Pathology Departments are accredited by the College of American Pathologists. This survey, which is conducted every two years, is accepted by the JCAHO and is done in lieu of their special survey for these programs. The survey team is made up of pathologists and laboratory managers and looks at policies, procedures, equipment, quality assurance and other aspects of the operations of these areas of the medical center.
