(ULC), "promotes and fosters the sport of women's flat track derby by facilitating the development of athletic ability, sportswomanship, and goodwill among member leagues." In keeping with the themes of empowerment, independence, and assertiveness that are so synonymous with roller derby, the WFTDA leagues operate under the motto "by the skaters, for the skaters." Even when she isn't working hard on the track, any ARRG skater still has plenty of responsibilities to league operations including recruiting, overseeing financial operations, promoting games and events, and setting rules and seasons.

ARRG was established in the fall of 2005 when Sarah-Kate Buckles (a.k.a. Mary Manglin') caught a Windy City Rollers bout while visiting Chicago. She returned to St. Louis with the goal of starting a similar league in her hometown. She hung fliers and told her friends, who told their friends. Soon, a group of excited women were attending open skate sessions at a local rink.
