Description
303 School Ave, West Jefferson :: PO Box 353, Jefferson, NC 28640 (336)846-ARTS :: jane@ashecountyarts.org Martin Luther King Day Celebration at the Ashe Arts Center The Ashe County Arts Council will be sponsoring a community celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King on Monday, January 18 at 7:00 pm at the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson. The celebration will highlight the message of Dr. King and his teachings of peace, unity and equality in our society. The featured performer for this event will be Mike Wiley, an actor based in North Carolina who has performed over ten years in theatre, film and television. As playwright and actor, his overriding goal is expanding cultural awareness – for all audiences – through dynamic portrayal of pivotal events to unveil a richer picture of the American experience. For the Martin Luther King Celebration, Wiley will perform excerpts from Tired Souls. The play documents the tales of Martin Luther King, Jr and others of the hundreds of men and women who stood up to Jim Crow’s segregation, held tight to their bus money and walked for freedom for 381 days. The presentation offers a historical narrative dramatization of culture and community seeking change. Other highlights of the celebration will be students and community members reading essays, speeches and tributes including Michelle Obama's Commencement Speech given at the University of California at Merced, "Drum Major Instinct Speech' and more. Special music will be presented by a community chorus under the direction of Diane Bryan-Leeper. The Martin Luther King celebration is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Come join the Arts Council for this free event. For more information please call 336-846-ARTS. For more information about Mike Wiley
