For thirty years, Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach (API Legal Outreach) has worked to tear down long-standing barriers that have denied Asians and Pacific Islanders equal justice and equal access to our legal system. By working closely with our clients and community groups, we can respond to our community's most pressing needs, both immediate and long-term. At the same time, we have been educators, lawyers, advocates, teachers working to instill in the API community a sense of its legal rights and community responsibilities. Among our ongoing accomplishments: - Providing holistic legal and social services for survivors of domestic violence in partnership with other community-based agencies to educate and empower the clients that we serve. - Raising awareness and removing barriers to abuse of elders in the API community; the Department of Justice recently awarded API Legal Outreach, in collaboration with the Victim Services Office of the San Francisco District Attorney and Kimochi, a grant to develop and implement comprehensive, culturally competent training programs on all facets of elder abuse. - Collaborating with emerging API communities to make legal services more accessible and culturally-sensitive; this year, we expanded our outreach efforts to target specifically the Laotian and Filipino communities. - Staffing clinics in Alameda, San Mateo, and San Francisco counties to make our services accessible to those with geographic or physical limitations. - Working to...
