Description

Prior to his death on May 29, 2003, Jim was a partner and co-founder of Associates in Dispute Resolution. He retired after serving 18 years as a Kansas District Court Judge in Shawnee County. Before Appointment to the bench, Jim was the United States Attorney for the District of Kansas (1977-81). His legal career began in 1966 with private practice in Topeka, Kansas. He also served as City Attorney for the city of Topeka and administrative assistant to a member of congress. He served four terms as State Representative in the Kansas Legislature. He has been involved in a wide range of litigation in state and federal court. He has experience in all types of torts and professional malpractice; employment, compensation and discrimination; commercial litigation including construction, insurance, securities and real estate; domestic relations; administrative appeals from all agencies of state government, and felony criminal trials. He has conducted over 150 jury trials. At the time of his death he was a Senior Judge on the Kansas Court of Appeals.

He is a partner in the Topeka law firm of Newbery, Ungerer & Hickert, LLP. In addition to private law practice, he served as Assistant Professor of Accounting and Taxation at Washburn University School of Business from 1982 to 1988, and has also taught several courses as an adjunct professor at Washburn University School of Law. From 1976 to 1979, he served as Director of Taxation with the Kansas Department of Revenue. He also practiced as a CPA with Deloitte & Touche (formerly Haskins Sells) (1973-1976). Altogether, he brings to his mediation practice 30 years of experience in business, accounting, tax, finance, business valuation, probate and trust, domestic property settlement, compensation and ERISA.
