Description
Applications of the latest steels will proliferate during the next 10 years as auto manufacturers seek to achieve improved safety and fuel economy requirements for their customers. Current vehicles have not nearly exhausted the breadth of AHSS grades available that can achieve lightweighting targets at less cost and five to 20 times less production emissions than alternative materials. This rapid increase in demand requires users of AHSS to quickly learn the basics about AHSS and acquire specific application knowledge.
The SMDI Automotive Excellence Award recognizes individuals or teams from automakers, suppliers or the academic community who embrace innovation and make significant contributions to the advancement of steel in the automotive marketplace. Award winners are chosen from presenters at the previous year’s GDIS seminar.
While the 54.5 mpg 2025 fuel economy requirement is more than 10 years away, the regulations require immediate attention. The fuel economy regulations have interim requirements that set standards throughout this time period. The Auto/Steel Partnership (A/SP) is focused on developing the enabling technologies to provide A/SP members with effective lightweighting steel solutions to meet the emerging 54.5 mpg fuel economy standards. All A/SP projects are designed with these needs in mind.
The Auto/Steel Partnership – a consortium of North American steel companies and automotive manufacturers – is celebrating its 25 year anniversary this year. Since its inception in 1987, the unique Partnership has helped bring the automotive and steel industries together to develop technology solutions that expedite the use of advanced high-strength steels in vehicles and address common issues to strengthen both industries.
