AZUSA had its beginnings back in the fall of 1981. As long time collectors of Native American photographs, AZUSA was established as our way to make available, for all people to see and collect, these magnificent and rare images that are such a vital part of American history. Our vision for the AZUSA COLLECTION is to provide an extensive visual and historical reference of the Native American and the changing frontier landscape during a time of westward expansion and a developing America. In so doing, we also hope to preserve in mind and heart, this important historical transition in Frontier America through the eyes of the Frontier photographer. We began by publishing images from the Sioux Wars and the Battle of Little Bighorn, which were actually invitations to an AZUSA sponsored exhibition of 110 photographs which document the plight of the Plains Indians from pre- reservation days of the 1860's up to the tragedy of Wounded Knee.
