Who we are The Backpacker Quality Gear, Incorporated began as a small outdoor specialty shop in Columbia S.C. in 1973. One of the owners, an avid backpacker, had been buying equipment from mail order houses like Herters, Ski Hut and LL Bean. In the early 70's, only two small specialty shops existed in the Carolinas- Jesse Brown's in Greer, S.C. and Footsloggers in Boone, N.C.. Lewis and Malcolm Jones opened The Backpacker in Columbia- an outdoor store, unique for the times, carrying products by pioneering companies like The North Face, Kelty Pack Incorporated, Sierra Designs, Camp 7, Great Pacific Iron Works, Forrest Mountaineering Limited, Alpine Designs, and SnowLion. These companies were the originators of cutting-edge, no compromise, state of the art products. Manufacturers that were doing innovative design in climbing gear, backpacks, tents, sleeping bags and technical outerwear-all of them trendsetters for the future of the industry. Thirty-six years and 3 expansions later, this family business continues their commitment to customers. Sept 2007 has marked our first expansion outside of Columbia to Mt Pleasant where Malcolm's daughter, Lauren is the new general manager there. We are a technical outdoor outfitter that strives to provide excellent customer service, a guarantee for every product, a knowledgeable, friendly staff all in a comfortable shoping environment. Some of our present lines include, Patagonia, The North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Columbia Sportswear, ExOfficio, Vasque boots, Keen Footwear, Teva, Chaco, and Tilley hats.
