On February 10, 2000, Governor Tommy G. Thompson recognized Baldwin Telecom, Inc. as a member of the Governor's Century Club. This award recognizes Wisconsin companies founded in 1900 and continuously in business in the state since then. Governor Thompson stated, AI want to recognize the businesses that have contributed so much to our communities over the past 100 years. Businesses have provided jobs, increased tax revenue and assisted charities and communities. Our oldest companies built the economic foundation for the prosperity that Wisconsin enjoys today.@ Baldwin Telecom is proud to be a part of the Century Club.Although detailed records were not kept in the early days of Baldwin Telecom, Inc. We have listed some interesting details that we thought you might enjoy. Four area businessmen proposed the Baldwin Telephone Exchange on August 2, 1900. They decided if the expanding community was to continue to grow that a means of local communication was necessary.A franchise was granted on August 3, 1900 by the Village of Baldwin and approved by the State of Wisconsin on August 17, 1900. The first officers elected to the company were George Martin, President, George Pittman, Vice President, G.M. Gorham, Secretary and F.E. Settergren, Treasurer.By 1901 lines were extended to Martell, Wisconsin, a village 12 miles away. In 1909, lines were built to Woodville, Hersey and Emerald, Wisconsin. The Company expanded at an even faster rate in 1910 when they purchased the Rush River and Eau Galle Telephone Companies.Baldwin Telecom, Inc. is a stock held company. Originally the capital stock offer of the Company was $3,000, divided into 30 shares of $100 each. In 1905 the capital stock was increased to $15,000. The original stock was sold to local business people and farmers from the surrounding rural area who by then were being provided with telephone service.
