Portland, ORE - June 17, 2014. Ball Janik LLP announces that Stephen T. Janik is stepping down as Chairman of the firm after ten years. The partnership has elected James T. Ball Janik LLP is a Pacific Northwest law firm headquartered in Portland, Oregon. For over thirty years, Ball Janik LLP has been providing outstanding legal services in the areas of bankruptcy and creditor rights, commercial litigation, construction, employment, government affairs, government contracts, real estate and land use, and securities litigation.

In federal court in Los Angeles, the firm defended a $30 million trade secret misappropriation claim by a Hollywood screenwriter against a Portland software developer. On the eve of trial the case settled, and is subject to a tight confidentiality agreement. In federal court in Portland, the firm obtained dissolution of a restraining order and summary judgment against non-competition claims brought by a manufacturer against a firm client, a terminated distributor. On many occasions, the firm also has successfully prosecuted the enforcement of trade secrets laws and non-competition agreements.

In federal court in Tacoma, the firm defended environmental claims of as much as $50 million against a Washington manufacturer. The case was settled in a creative way, which included the sale of our client’s property to the plaintiff, a Washington port authority, which also agreed to indemnify our client. In state court in San Francisco, the firm represented an Oregon company on claims contending that its products contained dangerous substances. The firm settled the claims for less than $20,000.

Ball Janik LLP represents Hoyt Street Properties, the developer of this mixed-use project on 40 acres of former railyard in Portland's Pearl District, which the client has transformed into a high-density residential and commercial neighborhood, where thousands of people now live and work. The Pearl is planned to include more than 2,500 units of housing with support retail and services. Our Land Use attorneys helped the client obtain development approvals and participated in extensive negotiations with the City over the provision of infrastructure and public amenities such as three public parks.
