In the short-term however, wine and grape producers are being impacted significantly by the 2008-09 recession. Consumers are purchasing fewer ultra-premium wines and more lower-priced labels. This has, in turn, left producers of ultra-premium wines with excess inventory and reluctance to purchase grapes. This, in turn, has led to a dramatic drop in grape prices for those growers not under contract. Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon is selling in the summer of 2009 for $2,000 to $3,000 per ton, down from $3,500 to $5,500 in 2008.
