Barclay Cottage is a luxury bed and breakfast inn offering vacation lodging in Virginia Beach, Va.A great alternative to a hotel or motel. It was built in 1895 as a clubhouse for a proposed golf course to be built around Lake Holly. The golf course was never built and the cottage wassold in 1916 to Lillian S. Barclay.Lillian Barclay immediately began accommodating guests in the cottage, making it the oldest lodging establishment in Virginia Beach. From about 1922 until 1976 Miss Lillian also ran a private elementary school on the property every year changing the guest bedrooms to classrooms in September and then back to guestrooms at the end of each school year.After her death in 1989, Miss Lillian's estate sold the property to developers in 1990 who built 5 houses on the grounds, remodeled the old house and sold it to Peter Catanese, who ran it as a bed and breakfast until selling the cottage to Stephen and Marie-Louise LaFond in 2003. The LaFonds upgraded and modernized all systems, and although filled with antiques, high quality reproductions, and hand-made quilts, Barclay Cottage boasts thoroughly modern conveniences such as a guest computer/business center, and wireless internet access everywhere on the property.Since 2003, Barclay Cottage Bed and Breakfast has won numerous awards, has been featured in magazines such as: Washingtonian; Continental (airline inflight mag); and Coastal Living. It has been featured in newspaper articles in the Virginian Pilot, Philadelphia Inquirer, Atlanta Journal Constitution, Connecticut Post, The New York Times, and others. It is inspected by and fully complies with the codes, regulations, and requirements of the Virginia State Health Department, the Bed and Breakfast Association of Virginia, AAA (three diamonds) and Frommers.
