Following Holy Names University’s decision to end Raskob High School after the 2006-2007 school year, Bay Area Educational Institute (BAEI) was incorporated in February 2006, as a California non-profit corporation for the purposes of providing educational services to students with learning differences.

Vanessa has a B.A. in Human Services and Diversity, Holy Names University and is currently enrolled in the M.A. of Urban Education Program at Holy Names University. She has over 30 years administrative experience working in a non-public special education school setting and as an active Board member for several Community agencies serving diverse populations throughout the Bay Area. Ms. Brown has extensive professional and personal experience in mentoring and training families from diversified backgrounds in the successful navigation of the educational/health and social services systems. She has developed programs for DEAF children and other children, youth and adults with special needs and has a broad range of experience in service identification, funding entitlements and empowering parents through advocacy trainings.

Shelley Lobell received her Masters in Learning Disabilities from Boston University and holds California Life Credentials in Learning and Severely Handicapped Special Education. Inspired by her father, special education pioneer Herb Lobell, Shelley has devoted her career to helping students with learning differences. She founded and directed Learning Services of Northern California, including the NPS Erikson School which served behaviorally challenged youth for over 30 years. Shelley consulted with the San Francisco Unified School District Department of Special Education, training teachers in behavior management, and was a member of the SFUSD Program Development Committee. She joined the Bayhill Community as Executive Director in August 2011 where she has directed and transformed the Bayhill program to provide quality educational and transitional services for students and their families.

Katherine has always had a passion for education. Her mother, a teacher of 35 years, encouraged her to take on the challenge of teaching. Katherine has a BA in Anthropology from Cal State Long Beach and single subject credentials in History & English. She has worked with students in the Bay Area including the Raskob school as a writing teacher. She believes with that all students can succeed with the right teaching, tools and resources.

The course being charted for this new high school draws directly on the decades-long success of the Raskob Institute and Day School, a program of Holy Names University in Oakland, California. The Raskob Institute, founded in 1953, is one of the oldest tutoring centers in the U. S. Raskob Day School was then established in 1973, and is licensed as a nonpublic, non-sectarian school that offers full-time instruction to learning-disabled children in 3 rd through 8 th grades.
