The Slam have announced that center Zach Bruce has signed a contract to play basketball overseas this winter. Bruce will travel to the north African country of Tunisia to compete with the team Ez-Zahra Sport in the country’s top division. Bruce, 25, recently completed his rookie professional season with the Slam this spring. He was added to the team’s roster in May to provide depth at the center position, and averaged 4.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in limited minutes. He scored a season-high 12 points in a 114-102 win at British Columbia on May 16. Bruce, along with fellow Viking teammates Morris Anderson and Derrick Webb, joined the Slam after completing their senior seasons at Western Washington in March. Bruce finished the 2009-10 season third on the team in scoring with 10.7 points per game and ranked first in rebounds with 6.4 per game. As a senior, he helped lead the Vikings to the semi-finals of the NCAA-II West Regional Tournament and was named an honorable mention Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-star at the conclusion of the season. Bruce transferred to Western Washington with Anderson and Webb after a two-year stint at Highline Community College. The trio led Highline to the NWAACC championship in 2006. Bruce will become the first player from the Slam or Western Washington University to compete professionally in Africa. Located in a suburb of the capital city of Tunis, the Ez-Zahra team has a rich history dating back to 1936, when the team was founded. The franchise won four league championships during the 1990’s, and finished the 2009-10 campaign with a record of 11-13. The team’s season runs from September through April. Guard Derrick Webb will head to Europe to compete with the Licher Bears in Germany’s second division. Webb, 23, recently completed a successful rookie professional season with the Slam this spring. After playing limited minutes to start the season, he had a superb second half, averaging 15.7 points in his last six games. Webb scored in double figures in eight games in 2010, with a season-high 20 points coming on June 25 against Tacoma. He proved to be an integral part of Bellingham’s postseason run, as he scored 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting in the team’s IBL conference final win over Yamhill on July 3. Webb also finished the season as the Slam’s best three-point shooter, connecting on 36.6 percent of his outside shots.
