Welcome to The University of Iowa Bassoon Studio. Currently the basoon studio is comprised of 4 graduate students and 9 undergraduate students. Many performing opportunities are available for bassoonists at The University of Iowa. Qualified bassoon majors may participate in The University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Symphony Band, Concert Band, University Band, Center for New Music, Double Reed Ensemble, and many others. The University of Iowa is frequently visited by distinguished musicians offering masterclasses, recitals and workshops. Guests include: Michael McCraw (Baroque bassoon - Indiana University), Arthur Weisberg (Indiana University), Kim Walker (international soloist and recording artist), William Ludwig (Indiana University), Eric Stomberg (University of Kansas and Interlochen), Albie Micklich (Arizona State), Daniel Matsukawa (Philadelphia Orchestra) Donald MacCourt (New York Woodwind Quintet), Jeff Lyman (University of Michigan), and Walter Thompson the creator of the "sound painting" a combination of improvisation, acting and written music. The University of Iowa offers financial assistance in the form of merit scholarships, assistantships, and fellowships. Several part-time professional orchestras in our area, such as the Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Dubuque, Quad City, and Ottumwa symphonies are excellent sources of additional musical experience and income. Bottom: Mallory Sharp, Rich Stiles, Michele, Tim, Cindy Mickens. Michele Bowen is the Bassoon instructor at Georgia State University, Atlanta. Michele is a D.M.A. candidate (ABD) at The University of Iowa, Michele hails from Evanston, Wyoming. She graduated with a BA in Music Performance from Brigham Young University in 2004 and with an MA in bassoon performance from the University of Iowa in 2006. She is an RA for Arts Share, the University of Iowa's outreach program for the arts. Michele is currently working on her DMA thesis about the life and career of Emeritus Professor and former UI School of Music Director Himie Voxman. Michele's other interests include: making pancakes for her friends, bike riding, camping, mountain climbing, playing the banjo, hearing a good story, and seeing the sun rise. She has a goal to someday climb Mt. Everest, and her favorite color is brown. Michele's future career of choice is undetermined at this time, although she does plan on becoming the world's first rock bassoonist. michele-bowen@uiowa.edu Rosalind is a Senior Music Performance and English Major. She is from Waukee, Iowa where she was an active musician in her school and community. Besides playing Bassoon, Rosalind enjoys playing the Highland Bagpipes competitively and all things related to Scottish and Irish culture and music. rosalind-buda@uiowa.edu Becky Coe is a bassoon student from East Moline, IL. She is currently pursuing a BA in music and a BS in biochemistry at the University of Iowa. She plans to apply to medical school and eventually become a physician. She currently enjoys playing bassoon to exercise her creative side and have a break from science classes! When not in classes, Becky enjoys being involved with neurological research, volunteering at the hospital, holding leadership positions for Medicus and Dance Marathon, and spending time at the Newman Catholic Student Center. rebecca-coe@uiowa.edu Sharaine Conner (Weathers) is a freshman at the University of Iowa studying Music Education and Social Work. Sharaine is from Des Moines, Iowa where she played bassoon in the Theodore Roosevelt Band Department for all four years of high school. While in Des Moines, she studied with Sue Odem on flute and bassoon. She also participated in the a number of honor bands including Simpson College, Drake University, Central College, Iowa State, her district honor band (SCIBA), and many more.
