Whether you have dieted and exercised your way to a thinner you or used some type of weight loss surgery to reach a healthier weight, the battle back from obesity sometimes leaves you wondering how to handle your new and improved self! When food has been a big part of your life, you have to focus on other things in order to avoid the pitfalls that will bring you right back to a life of unhealthy eating. You have reached your ideal weight, and you want to stay there! You are going to have to recognize the need to change not only your lifestyle, but your long held expectations of how things are done. Once you have learned how to lose the weight, you have to know how to keep it off without getting frustrated. You soon find out, whether you were an obese person or not, food factors in heavily in all of life’s milestones. We celebrate our happy occasions with food, and we mourn the sad times with food. We incorporate food traditions into every holiday, and even plans for an evening out seem to always center on where you might go to eat. Finding ways to break the food habit can be difficult, but not impossible. Dedicate yourself to finding ways to break the vicious food cycle that led to your obesity in the first place. Holiday traditions do not have to focus only on the eating. Start a tradition of making your own holiday ornaments instead of filling a table with your homemade holiday cookies. Instead of cooking a big turkey dinner with all of the trimmings at Thanksgiving, volunteer your time to serve Thanksgiving dinner at a homeless shelter or a hospital. You can even avoid the temptation of Halloween candy by giving healthier options like raisins, pencils, or snack sized bags of low fat pretzels. Numerous organizations now also collect Halloween candy to donate to homeless shelters or to send to the troops in Iraq, so let your own little trick or treaters pull out a few of their favorite pieces of candy, and donate the rest so you won’t be the one snacking. Even on occasions when you get together only for the food, you can make choices that will keep you at your ideal weight. As you attend all the summer parties and barbecues, you can keep the focus on your ideal weight by choosing to grill salmon, shrimp, and chicken instead of the higher fat burgers or ribs with heavily sweetened sauces. Opt for a garden salad instead of a fattening potato salad, or replace the mayonnaise in some of the traditional dishes with vinegar and oil or balsamic vinaigrette. Still enjoy the day – and the food – but making a conscious effort to avoid bad choices will help you maintain your weight loss. Dessert is the favorite part of every meal, but as you battle your way back from obesity, dessert can be the enemy. In your own home, avoid temptation by avoiding purchasing things that will work against you. Many moms are guilty of buying cookies, cakes, chips and other desserts and snack foods because their children want them. If YOU shouldn’t be eating these types of foods, your CHILDREN shouldn’t be eating them either! Substitute sticky, sweet, and unhealthy desserts with sugar free flavored gelatins and puddings with sugar free whipped cream.
