Description

My name is Detective Rich Wistocki. I have been a law enforcement officer for the past twenty years. For the past ten years of my career, I have been a Juvenile and Internet Detective with a highly progressive Illinois Police Department. Upon serving my community and dealing with wayward teens, I have had many cases dealing with teens on the edge. In dealing with approximately 300 teens per year on my caseload, I have seen almost every difficult aspect in a teen's life. I have handled cases from running away all the way to homicide. In most of the cases that I have handled, there seemed to be a common denominator. This was illicit drug use. Whether it was the abusing of drugs, stealing for drugs, traffic accidents or physical altercations as a result of intoxication, drugs seemed to play a role. The biggest frustration for the parents of the teens I deal with is why their child would commit the crimes they did. When you ask about drug abuse, the parent would most of the time say "Oh no not my kid." Thus, I call this the NMK syndrome. Parents who are experiencing this disease will no doubt enable their child to become involved in drug abuse. After experiencing NMK time and time again, I thought it was time for action. Part of the Juvenile Justice procedures in Illinois is to offer a first time juvenile offenders with what we call a Station Adjustment. In a Station Adjustment, the parent, teen and youth investigator sign a contract that the teen will perform certain consequences for their behavior. It was during one of these station adjustments with a teen that was arrested for Marijuana possession at the age of 14, that the juvenile's parent asked me if there was anyplace she could get a drug test that came with immediate results. (Oddly enough this was her third son involved in smoking pot. Her second son was driving a car that killed one of the rear passengers when he was drunk and high.) She wanted this test after her 14-year-old son came home late one night and "he just didn’t seem right." Therefore, she needed to test her son the next morning. When she went to the drug store, she found out that she had to send these tests kits out for thirty days before receiving a result. This did not do her any good. She needed to confront her teen immediately for a swift response to his behavior. I was at a loss of words. My usual answer was taking him to the pediatrician. However, with the new HIPPA laws, he had a right to refuse the test. This concerned parent searched high and low for answers. She searched the Internet for days without finding an answer. This mom had urged me to search out such a product. This was how Be-Sure was formed. At Be-Sure we are working for a better tomorrow. Early prevention in teen drug use is the key for a long healthy life for our children. Thank you for Being Sure!!!!
