But for many of their loyal customers, one of the best parts about Hat & Sole isn’t just what you can buy, it’s the gathering place where you can buy it. Step into the store, breathe in the aromatic mix of incense and leather, look around at the unusual merchandise -- and you might even make some new friends among the friendly clientele. “We are honored to be considered a local landmark,” says Hat & Sole general manager, Eliza Ingram. “I view our store as a destination place. People come for the experience of shopping for high quality merchandise in a friendly atmosphere. They come to shop but stick around for conversation, whether it be about politics, philosophy or the grandkids." Formerly known as Son of a Son of a Cobber, Hat & Sole was founded in the early-1980s by owner Joshua Kelner, known as Shooky. Hat & Sole started near Ohio State University as a leather goods store and in 1984 moved to Bexley. The store is now located at 2378 East Main Street in the Grinder’s shopping strip. Shooky’s business philosophy is still the key to the store’s success: It’s not just to make the sale, but to make a customer. Eclectic merchandise “I really think that’s why we’ve been so successful here, we offer such an eclectic mix of merchandise,” says Ingram. “A lot of our things are unique.” Hat & Sole offers Naots and Birkenstocks as well as footwear with flair from companies like Dansko, Teva, UGG, Birki and Earth. Sandals are as available in January as they are in July. In hats, the store sells everything from Stetson and Biltmore, to Bailey, Borsalino, Barmah, Tilley and Dobbs. At Hat & Sole, you can find a wide range of leather goods including purses, wallets and belts. The store sells many items that make special gifts such as African and other kinds of art, handmade boxes, masks, incense, jewelry, socks and candles. Importantly, Hat & Sole offers the master services of Thomas the cobbler who has been skillfully repairing shoes for the store since its inception. Above all, Hat & Sole provides exceptional customer service. Says Ingram: “We pride ourselves on customer service. Our knowledgeable staff provides a lot of one-on-one time with each customer, which differentiates us from larger retailers. We love what we do, and I think that shows. Great service, with a smile, is what keeps bringing our customers back." Strong, essential Chamber involvement Ingram is a Bexley Chamber board member and she heads the board’s nominating committee. A driving force behind the Taste of Bexley, Ingram served as vendor liaison. She also coordinated the celebrity judges and set up the event layout at Franklin Park Conservatory.
