The Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts (BIAMA) is a 501(c3), non-profit organization incorporated in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1982 to address the needs of persons with traumatic brain injuries. Expansion of emergency medical systems and improvements in trauma care led to an increase in the number of survivors of brain injury. The needs of the brain injured survivors and their families were not being addressed by the medical community or any state agency. The community was ill-prepared to serve this population. A group of frustrated families of survivors raised awareness of brain injury and the medical community began to address those needs. BIAMA is the leading advocate for assuring that persons who experience brain injuries in the Commonwealth have adequate services to meet their needs.
