Technology meets Sustainability; doing business responsibly. From the beginning, we felt it was important to recycle used computer equipment and related packaging, paper, cardboard boxes and block Styrofoam. It was just something we knew we wanted to do. Over the last several years however, we have chosen to take an even stronger stance to recycle and reduce the amount of waste that we have to manage in running our business. We have decided to use more eco-friendly products and to support additional methods of sustainability. We do this not because we have to or because it makes us look good, but because it's just the right thing to do. You name it, we recycle it! - - - - - - - - - - Reducing waste - - - - - Improved Server Management Reduces Consumption We are increasingly using a technology called "virtualization" which, allows us to consolidate multiple servers into fewer physical servers. This results in less overall packaging and power consumption. Additionally, it allows clients using our hosted services to decrease their waste. Supporting Renewable Power Binary Science, Incorporated is constantly looking for ways to become a more sustainable business. We are proud that 100% of the power at our off-site data center at EasyStreet uses PGE's Clean Wind power and Binary Science contributes a portion of its monthly co-location charges to the PGE Clean Wind energy program. Cellular recycling and conservation We help our clients manage a variety of cellular devices. With technology advancing at a rapid pace, our clients always prefer the latest and greatest device. In the past we 'recycled' cellular devices but, now we have found a better solution. We have decided to partner with Eco-Cell to satisfy our need to recycle and to also benefit gorillas! What do gorillas have to do with cellular devices? Cell phones include a metallic ore called 'Coltan', (an essential coating for cell phone components) which is a mineral extracted in the deep forests of the Congo in central Africa. The Congo is home to the world's beautiful, yet endangered lowland gorillas. 80% of the world's known Coltan supply is in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Fueled by the worldwide cell phone boom, the Congo's out-of-control Coltan mining business has in recent years led to a 90% reduction of the gorilla population. Reducing the need for Coltan could help save these animals and their habitat. Because of our passion for technology and animals, we have partnered with Eco-Cell in an effort to recycle cellular waste (cell phones, batteries and accessories). Eco-Cell refurbishes approximately 70% of the phones which are then reused by first-time users in developing markets, such as Africa and Latin America. Phones are also distributed to other organizations including hospitals abroad and Battered Women's Programs for emergency use (911 calls). For each device that Eco-Cell is able to refurbish and resell, Binary Science receives a minimal payment which we have chosen to donate to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International . The foundation is dedicated to preserving the Congo gorilla habitat. Local Sustainability We are also a member of the Sustainable Business Network of Portland (SBNP). Their primary goal is to build a strong local network of community-based businesses, non-profit organizations and supportive individuals fostering a truly sustainable local economy in the Portland Metropolitan Area. We support wind power because it works — as a sustainable energy source and an economic boost for wind-generating rural communities. The Business Recycling Awards Group (BRAG) recognizes businesses in Clackamas County doing an outstanding job of recycling, waste reduction and purchasing recycled-content products. Binary Science receives distinguished BRAG award for sustainability and recycling efforts The award, known as the distinguished "BRAG" (Business Recycling Awards Group) Award, was presented in a ceremony at Lake Oswego City Hall by City Councilor Mary Olson on May 8.
