Nordstrom Oil Company was founded in 1953 by Floyd O. Nordstrom (1903-1981). The company began as a distributor of Phillips 66 petroleum products, automotive accessories, tires and batteries, and served a handful of customers out of one warehouse in Cedar Rapids. His son, Bill, joined Mr. Nordstrom in the business in 1955.Nordstrom Oil Company grew until at one time during the 1960's, the company had 35 service station dealers, two truck stops (one of which was in western Nebraska) and five wholesale bulk gas and fuel oil plants. During the 1970's, petroleum shortages and embargoes struck, and Nordstrom Oil Company executives made the decision to consolidate their marketing program into fewer, but higher volume outlets.Also in the 1970's, Nordstrom Oil Company was first in Cedar Rapids to introduce mini-serve and self-serve islands at its stations. In 1978, Nordstrom Oil Company had the first service station in the US to sell gasohol.
