The traditional WLAN network consists of access points that are connected to the network's switch and router plane. The access point performs several very important tasks. Each AP must be set up with configuration and management including security policy. The so called "fat" AP performs key tasks of user authentication and message encryption. In the past couple years, a new WLAN design concept has been developed. The manufactures Aruba Networks, Cisco Systems, and a few others have WLAN switches and use "thin" access points. The WLAN switch takes on the task of authentication and encryption.

The most obvious asset to protect is the company's intellectual property. These are the plans, drawings, trade secrets, etc. Everything that makes the company an unique entity and could ruin the company if ever made public or fell into the wrong hands. Another asset is your company's communication network. E-mail and database services are extremely important for operations and must not be misconfigured in a malicious manner. Then there are the web services. The company and public web site must not be misconfigured.
