It's Saturday at 6 pm and the delivery people came and went. At least most of them came, but as far as I can tell, they all did leave. Here's the report for those truely bored enough to read about things being delivered to my house. #1: DirecTV. Arrived at a good hour. Nice guy. Did what he needed to. Bribed him to add some wires for the internet which has nothing to do with why he was there. He charged me $30 but I didn't have to go into the crawl space below the house and been eaten/bitten by a black widow or some some sort of rat, so it was worth it. Unfortunately, he left unslightly holes in the wall which I must cover up, drilled a hole without bothering to check what was below it (it was the foundation, so he left a hole in the floor). Overall grade, considering what was about to come: B+ #2: Charter Cable. To install the intenet. Nice guy, very nice. Too bad he wasn't really that knowledgable of how to install a cable modem. Actually, he knew alot, but still managed to leave me with a defective cable modem and no way for the Macintosh to get on the interenet, even though a Windows machine would. He said, "I just don't know. Call the help desk." I did, and they were shocked that he he left me the wrong cable modem for what I ordered. He got the Mac working and rescheduled another delivery for tomorrow for the correct cable modem. He also refunded the $50 installation charge I had to pay for that bad service. Grade: B #3: the bed. They showed up on time. They delivered the parts. They didn't say a word and were about as friendly as a dose of the swine flu. No thanks when I paid, no receipt, no talking, and their brochure talks about how friendly the delivery service is. I guess it's some sort of subtle joke that I just didn't get. Grade: B+ #4: DirecTV visit 2 for the antenna on the roof. This was to happen between 12-4. Around 4:15 I was beginning to get worried. I called and spoke to the oddest customer service rep ever. It was like she was involved in a contest to see how few words you could say to a caller before they started yelling. The call was a half hour and she may have uttered words maybe 2 minutes total during that time. She "discovered" that the visit to my house was cancelled but she never "discovered" why it was cancelled. So she "scheduled" another attempt a week from Sunday. I told her that California law gives the customer a payment if a delivery doesn't show and no attempt was made to reschedule. As per the rest of the call, she had nothing to comment abou that. I think she said, "Let me see ..." and then "I cannot find out about that." So I gave up. Grade: D, because the customer service rep at least managed to schedule another visit to the house which will probably never happen! So tomorrow the cable guy comes again for attempt 2. Funny thing is, the internet seems to work just fine. But they insisted that it can't be working fine and inplied that my modem will eventually freak out and cry out in pain, a direct quote.
