Robert P. Boyle and Fred Wood established our firm in 1966 with a vision to serve their community. Ed Bain joined the firm in 1969 as a law clerk; he earned his J.D. in 1971 and became a member of the firm in 1971. In the 1980s and 1990s the firm and its reputation for quality service continued to grow. Robert Boyle died in 1992. In 2001 Bob Downer, one of the firm’s partners at the time, became a Judge of the Charlottesville General District Court. Forbes Reback and Marshall Slayton joined the firm in 2002, forming the core group that has led the community in conservation easement formation, and now in bankruptcy law offering advocacy for debtor rights. Associates Tim Kelsey and Connor Crook bring expertise in transactional and litigation aspects of Virginia law. Tim Kelsey became a partner effective January 1, 2008. Forbes Robinson Reback , Member Forbes Robinson Reback was born in New York, New York, August 6, 1935. Mr. Reback attended the Hotchkiss School and Cornell University, graduating with a B.S. in agriculture in 1958. He earned his LL.B. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1964, and was admitted to the Virginia Bar the same year. He has held the position of Assistant Commissioner of Accounts, Albemarle County, since 1981. Mr. Reback heads the Conservation Easement team of the firm, with a longtime interest in agriculture and farming; he specializes in farm and estates easements. His other areas of practice include general civil practice, real estate, business law, wills and probate, and estate planning. Edward H. Bain, Jr. , Member Born in Crozet, Virginia, November 15, 1940, Ed Bain attended Belmont Abbey College, graduating with a B.A. in history in 1962. He earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1971, and was admitted to the Virginia State Bar the same year. He was admitted to the Virginia and U.S. District Court, and Western District of Virginia in 1971 as well, and is a member of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Bar Association. Ed Bain has served as Commissioner of Accounts for the City of Charlottesville since 2005. He was a member of the Albemarle County School Board from 1986-1987, and the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors from 1987-1994. He is currently on the advisory council of the Legal Aid Justice Center. Mr. Bain’s areas of practice are general practice, civil practice, real estate, probate, civil litigation, and eminent domain. Marshall M. Slayton , Member Marshall Slayton was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 27, 1965. He attended the University of Virginia, earning a B.A. with high distinction in 1988, and a J.D. in 1994. Mr. Slayton was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1994, and the U.S. District Court, Western District of Virginia and U.S. Bankruptcy Court in 1995. He is a member of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Bar Association, and the Virginia State Bar (Bankruptcy Section). He has held positions on the Charlottesville Planning Commission from 1997 to 2001, and the Charlottesville Board of Zoning Appeals from 1997 to 2001. Mr. Slayton has expertise in bankruptcy law. He completed Max Gardner’s Bankruptcy Bootcamp and is practiced in protecting the interests of consumers and debtors within the current bankruptcy laws. He also practices civil and criminal law, including traffic violations and personal injury law. Timothy I. Kelsey , Member Tim Kelsey was born in Durham, North Carolina on February 13, 1976. He earned a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998 and a J.D. from the Catholic University of America in 2001. He was admitted to the Maryland State Bar in 2001 (currently inactive), the District of Columbia Bar (currently inactive) in 2001, the Virginia State Bar in 2002, and the U.S. District Court, Western District of Virginia and U.S. Bankruptcy Court in 2005. Mr. Kelsey currently volunteers for the pro-bono housing division of Central Virginia Legal Aid Society and is a member of Charlottesville-Albemarle Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. Tim Kelsey’s areas of practice include civil practice, real estate, business law, estate planning, and conservation easements. C. Connor Crook , Associate Charles Connor Crook, III was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on September 30, 1975. He earned a B.A. in political science from the College of Charleston in 1996 and a J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1999. Mr. Crook was admitted to practice in South Carolina and North Carolina in 1999 and 2003 (currently inactive in both) and Virginia in 2005. Mr. Crook is the author of "Validity and Enforceability of Liability of Waivers on Ski Lift Tickets,” Campbell L. Review, Vol 28:1; and "Inherent Risks and Liability Waivers: Two Potential Pitfalls in Recreational Tort Litigation," Trial Briefs, April 2006. Mr. Crook’s areas of practice include civil litigation with an emphasis on construction and real estate disputes, criminal defense, and family law. Eamon F. Redmond , Associate Eamon Redmond was born in Newburgh, New York on August 17, 1983. He earned a B.A. from the University of Virginia in 2005 and he earned a J.D., cum laude, from the American University Washington College of Law in 2008. He was admitted to practice in Virginia in 2008. Mr. Redmond’s areas of practice include civil litigation, real estate, and business and transactional law. Jon Woodruff , Associate Jon Woodruff was born in Mishawaka, Indiana on August 11, 1975. Mr. Woodruff earned a B.A. in Physics from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1995 and a J.D. from the University of Virginia in 2003. He was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 2003, the District of Columbia Bar in 2004, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Virginia in 2009. He is a member of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar (Bankruptcy Section). Mr. Woodruff currently practices in the areas of bankruptcy law and debtor rights, and has substantial past experience in insurance defense work.
